If you have always had the Northern Lights on your bucket list, its time to cross it off. We are running an incredibly good value arctic tour this season through November 2015 - March 2016. It is aimed at photographers at any level, be it beginner or even total starter. You will need a good fitness level and have your own DSLR camera, everything else can be rented from us.
I lead all tours with my assistant Veronique. We are dedicated to giving you the best possible chances of seeing the Northern lights with our 10 seasons of experience. Utilising auroral activity, moon phases and weather forecasts, we calculate the best place to be to see the aurora every night. Although it can’t be guaranteed, 100% of our tours have photographed the aurora on multiple nights!
The tours are kept to 5 people maximum to ensure everyone gets plenty of one on one tuition. You don’t have to know much about photography as I will teach you everything there and guide you the whole time so you don’t miss a shot.
This season we are offering two main destinations, Iceland and Norway/Sweden/Finland. Both incredible environments regardless of the aurora and have very different activities to do. The hardest part of the tours is choosing between them!
Iceland offers a epic surreal scenery unlike any other on Earth. Its volcantic creation has given rise to fantasy like landscapes and unique rock formations - incredible photo opportunities before the aurora has even started!
The downside to Iceland its extreme and unpredictable weather. The chances of clear sky is less and therefore it will be harder to see the aurora. However, we have timed this tour at the best weather forecast months and all tours to date have seen the aurora.
Iceland also offers very unique activities, not to mention the fantastic capital arctic city of Reykjavik, bustling with bars, restaurants and shopping.
Activities include relaxing in the geothermal Blue Lagoon, ice caving inside a glacier (my personal favourite), lava tube caving and snorkeling in crystal clear water between tectonic plates. Examples of the photographs you will learn to take are below.
We recommend at least 6 days, preferably 8 to increase chances to see the Northern Lights because of Iceland's unpredictable weather.
Tromsø, Norway has the best weather for seeing the aurora as well as an incredible variety of scenery through access to Sweden and Finland. From coastal arctic beaches between giant fjords to deep snowy forests inside Finland, this tour has fantastic range to offer the adventurer!
Activities available include Polar Park visit to be inside the enclosure with arctic foxes, lynx, and wolves, husky dog sledding, snow mobiling through Finnish forests, ice climbing up frozen waterfalls in Sweden and ice fishing to mention a few favorites.
Norway can be from 5 to 10 day tours.
To join the tour all team members should own their own DSLR camera. Unfortunately, phone cameras and small point and shoot cameras do not capture the aurora well enough (take note the new GoPro Hero4 has a Nightlapse mode that is capable of capturing the aurora well). More information will be sent out upon booking a tour, but here is a guide:
To make it easy I have opened up a rental system to make your experience more affordable and practical. Gear available will include Canon L series lenses, Nikon lenses, snow boots, tripods and camera remotes. Please state what you are interested in when booking so I can arrange the gear.
During the course of your tour you will learn the basics of photography and working your DSLRs manual features as well as many mini lessons in different techniques including post production tutorials in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. All lessons have hand out notes to keep and look back on. We host both practical and theory lessons (for those nights that are clouded over).
Originally from Sydney but now a dual citizen of Australia and the UK. I moved to London for new experiences and a change. Since my first adventure in Tromsø 2007 I became addicted to travel and aurora photography, so much so, I wanted to follow my dreams and create a following from my passion. And so, Aurora Chasers was born.
Recent successes include FWA Photo of The Day, highly commended in Eden Shorts competition for my time-lapse video ‘NORTH’ which was filmed on the 2014 tour, it will be featured on UK TV. All photographs on this site are from the 2014 tour.
More of Jamen’s adventures can be seen on his Instagram and 500px portfolio.
Vero is a French expat living in UK for the past 10 years now. She’s been working in graphic design for almost 15 years in-between traveling around the world. Her passion for art and travel lead her way into photography. She states (in a French accent):
‘Photography enables me to catch the best of what I’m discovering in my journeys. Northern lights were definitely on my bucket list and thanks to Jamen who I join for Iceland 2013 tour I reached my dream. I have since been back to Norway and Sweden and are still amazed by this spectacular show.’
