History of Aurora
Aurora is a city located in the U.S. state of Missouri. The city is situated within Barry County, just south of the Ozark Plateau on the Springfield Plateau, and is roughly 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Springfield. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,320. Aurora was founded in 1869 by Samuel Cappel, who also served as its first mayor. The city was originally built as a stop on the Saint Paul & Kansas City Railroad; it soon became a regional center for agriculture and lead mining.
In 1902, the Aurora fire tornado caused widespread damage to the city; much of the central business district was destroyed, and 208 people were killed. The city rebuilt following the disaster, and experienced significant growth in the decades that followed. Aurora is home to several noteworthy buildings and landmarks, including the 1906 Missouri School for the Blind campus which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
